Legally, they’re supposed to be paid the same as anyone else - subject to rules regarding overtime, minimum wage, working conditions, and the right to complain, unionize (I think), or sue - for the exact reason that undocumented workers being exploited hurts them and other workers.

They didn’t forget; society has been bludgeoned nonstop by conservative-corporatist propaganda for decades. The 80s were catastrophic for unions because they resurrected the idea that corporate greed is somehow a good thing, yet unions wanting better conditions for their workers is “bad greed.”
