It’s a very Canadian movie. I mean that in the best possible way. Definitely worth a view. It may even be in full version on Youtube. I am running into a lot of modern war films on it.

All Quiet is hands down one of the greatest war films, period. It was so affecting to its star Lee Ayres, that he became a conscientious objector when drafted into WWII. He served as a medic.

Why am I getting the feeling Gambi is really going to be the “big bad” villain by the end of the season?

Its not that hard. Plenty of countries have developed health care systems which grant access to wider swaths of the population for less cost than our own.

My take is that he has enough empathy to understand that there are plenty of parents who under the same situation, would end up with a dead child.

The realistic limit being conditions which are normally treatable with competent medical attention, as opposed to experimental or extraordinary measures.  

Well to be honest, a lot of their opposition has little to do with facts or understanding the situation. So no argument is going to work on them until they or someone they know gets sick and is un/under insured.
