Once I went to non-POC co-worker’s home who lived in Coxsackie,  the family had a beautiful chocolate Lab who took to me instantly. My co-worker’s mother commented, “She likes you because you are the same color, so you’re her friend.” So there’s that. 

Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity ... and all that.  I had the same thought.  The wording could easily suggest “we’re not aware enough to understand that this is racist”.  Not that that makes it much better - they SHOULD be more educated about real diversity.
