They changed it when developing the first game because they just sound better. War and Death are easy to work with in a video game environment, but how lame would it be to play as Famine? Strife and Fury sound way cooler.

Why do you refer to the effects that drugs have on the brain as a malfunction? You put the chemicals in, the brain processes them, it does what the chemicals make the brain do. It functions exactly as the chemicals you input make it function.
