And, ultimately, even Batman is just the object that the Joker is using to try and work out his own issues: it’s important that he convinces Batmn that his own (Joker’s) descent…
Right. She’s not shot as, or for being, Batgirl. She’s just in between the Joker and the object of his mania. I never saw it as any kind of a sexist statement, or misogynistic side effect - ‘she’s a woman in the way’ - but as just a sad, random act of violence from a random psychopath.
The Killing Joke is a story of Batman and the Joker. It is not Barbara’s story.
Barbara creates the persona/costume of Batgirl as homage to/fan of Batman. She emulates her hero in fighting crime dressed as a bat. The “Bat Family” at this point consists of one man and his son/protege - and that’s all. She is not part of the family.
