Guns are banned in the UK. Criminals still get them (as they do drugs and other prohibited materials). But we don’t have fucking mass shootings every day. Even ineffectively banning guns would be something, maybe drop it to a mass shooting every week instead of every day.
The second amendment was also written by men who could not even conceive of a semi-automatic rifle, or a handgun that’s easily concealed and can carry multiple shots.
Gun control failed. We need to go to the next logical step. We have proven that we, as a society, cannot handle this “right.”
Don’t forget the NRA! They work mostly to ensure that gun manufacturers make a profit... So it’s also good for them to rile up the base with this “only a good guy with a gun...” nonsense. Sometimes I doubt they even believe it.
The slavery ban held up. I haven’t been forced to shelter troops lately either, but the day is young.
Guns serve no purpose (outside of Greg’s very explicit list) in 2015 America
Ban all guns. Make them illegal to posses. Getting caught with one is an automatic jail sentence. This nonsense has gone on for too long. This amendment was authored by people who were okay with slavery. It does not, and should not, translate to 2015 America
I kinda agree with “everyone should work retail or service at least once in their lives” but I say everyone should work retail AND as a waiter/waitress early in their lives. When working retail you typically only have to deal with people for a minute or two at most and you learn that the world is full of idiots (which…
Bill Cosby and Saudi Arabia is simply perfect. He has about the same moral compass they do, which by I mean, women should shut their mouths and just enjoy their rapings, beatings, and oppression.
Just because the publishing industry is heavily female, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be deeply sexist when it comes to their impressions of male versus female writing, and what will sell.
It’s incredible how pervasive unconscious bias is. I was floored by that study that showed unconscious gender bias in grading math papers. You would think that in something as purely logical as math, it wouldn't have room to seep in, but it did.
I suspect Lynx might be referring to Rowling’s pseudonym of Robert Galbraith.
In her defense, she’s now pretty well-known under that name. It’d be a little weird for her to change it all of a sudden.
It was her publisher’s suggestion. They didn’t think boys would want to read a book by a woman, so “Jo” became “J” and she didn’t have a middle name, so she took the “K” from her mother, Kathleen.
In all honesty, this is part of the reason I am stalling on writing a novel. I am in serious fear I will never be able to sell it as general fiction once they figure out that I am, 1) a female, and 2) Black. Even though the novel I have half written could apply to anyone, it will be genre marketed to death, if it is…
my parents gave me a very masculine name— in fact I have only, in my 27 years of existence, even heard of two other women with my particular name— and when I apply to jobs and correspond electronically I don’t give any indication that I am, in fact, female. It’s a little ongoing experiment of mine. People’s reactions…
Good article, but how is number six a "highly desired skill"? Just saying, doesn't really fit.
