I would add to this that the main characters, as developed by Asimov, are successful because they are clever and adaptable. Asimov believed that intelligence could win the day - and I hope that sensibility comes through in the series.

I reread the original Foundation trilogy over the summer, and one thing that struck me was the optimism. In terms of optimism, the average Foundation adventure makes a typical TNG episode look like a David Fincher movie.
