Yeah, he took that pretty personally it seemed.

People always like to forget that Tesla was selling actual cars before its IPO. Sure it was a niche car but it was tangible and people could actually buy it and drive it. That’s a huge step in the car world to actually have a saleable product. All these people “investing” in vaporware companies are in for a hard time.

Seriously. I cannot wrap my mind around it.

Or they are admirably sticking to their guns and refusing to accept the very real tradeoffs of forced induction engines in light, sporty cars.

Does any automaker “have their heart” into selling low-margin cars when they have a line around the block with people ready to purchase well-optioned ones? Jalopnik whining about Tesla, once again.

Autopilot is not their ridiculous “FSD” and isn’t really any different from any other company’s driver-assist tech. So, no, it doesn’t make the cars uninsurable. And go sit in a car with cloth seats and one with well-made pleather seats and honestly tell me the cloth is better.

Listen, I’m clearly a Tesla shill, and even I will admit the stock price is ridiculous. Nearly $400,000,000,000 for a company that might sell 500k cars this year? I think Tesla has a lot of growth potential, but for them to really be worth 4x that of the VW Group, they had better be making 4 times as many cars and 4

Honestly, this whole debate is dumb.

Need more salt? Seems like you’ve used quite a bit.

So is the hypothesis that the driver was asleep? With his foot on the “gas” pedal? Because unless Tesla’s work wildly differently than other vehicles, I assume if the autopilot was turned off 40 seconds before the impact, the car would have decelerated rather than continued to speed up. That requires manual

That said, why on earth does the Tesla Software allow for AP to be engaged at 135mph?

Autopilot disengaged about 40 seconds prior to impact due to the Tesla issuing a Forward Collision Warning (FCW) chime which happened again about two seconds prior to impact.

The driver must have continued to accelerate because black box data recovered by GreenTheOnly records a speed at the time of impact of 135.55 mph:

40 seconds at 136 mph translates to just over 1.5 miles traveled. It didn’t detect an imminent impact and fail to prevent it. It issued a warning (unrelated to this eventual impact) and canceled, and this idiot driver continued accelerating and clipped the Honda traveling right in front of it. Autopilot ain’t perfect

The driver was inattentive, but had their foot matted to the floor at over 120mph? You don’t just end up going 120+ out of “inattention.” That’s a deliberate choice.

Shitting on Tesla is one of my favorite pastimes, but this isn’t a Tesla story, this is a crappy driver story. 40 seconds is a long time.

Only Jalopnik could blame Tesla for a DRIVER driving at 130+mph. This has ZILCH to do with the car. The car did the correct thing and disengaged the self-driving when the driver was being an ass. AEB will NEVER stop a collision at those speeds.

I’d love to pile on Tesla here, and blame their marketing gimmick nonsense Level 2 system.

After “Autopilot” disengaged, the car continued on for 40 seconds during which time the car steadily accelerated to 130mph while maintaining lane position around a long curve for at least 10 seconds prior to impact.
