I’d probably go for the 159 rather than the 156 but, as the article shows, the 156 is well into banger territory now and you can have a punt on one for well under a thousand pounds/euros.

Now we know where they all ended up!

I’ve had mixed replies on the width argument and I think it depends on whereabouts you are in the UK. I’m in rural Scotland so, despite the last run of Mustangs selling out over here, I’d love to see a show of hands from anyone who has actually seen one on the roads!

I’m no Bill Bryson, but I do like taking a satirical view of the differences between the UK and the USA. We are closer than you would imagine and yet further apart than most people believe.

Heh! Touche.

One of the fundamental differences between the States and the UK that first time visitors on both sides of the Atlantic should bear in mind...

Ah.. just Google how much they cost. Then get back to me :)

Then, sir, I really do have to amend my opinions. My impression was that a Mustang, even if a few years old and a base model, was well within the reach of the average person. And by average I mean people struggling to make sure their rent or mortgage is paid, maybe working two jobs, that kind of thing.

Great point about LPG conversion that’s often missed with big displacement engines. Costs you up front, but big savings from there on in. Not many LPG pumps in the UK but there are enough to make it doable - it’s not something I’d considered and a star to you for mentioning it.

Funny you should say that...

That’s a bit mean. If you want to have an adult conversation about how my experiences in the USA aren’t representative of the country as a whole then I’d be delighted. If, however, you just want to post a couple of lines of snarky put-downs at every turn then I don’t think there’s much mileage in it...

Sadly it isn’t. It exists only in my mind as a generic representation of a small English village with tiny streets you’d struggle to get a motorbike through.

Quite a few people have pulled me up for the size thing and a quick bit of wiki-ing shows its pretty much exactly the same size as a Bentley Continental GT.

American cars have a sizeable following in the UK, but they’re rarely used as daily drivers.

I totally agree. I can afford to *buy* a Mustang but you’ve slightly missed the point.

Children, STOP RUNNING INTO THE ROAD AFTER THE DOG OR YOUR BALL. STOP BEING IDIOTS AND PUSHING EACH OTHER AROUND CARS WHEN SCHOOL ENDS.

777. I visit the States quite regularly so I’ve got to drive a lot of things that are unheard of in Europe. I’ve tried to steer my daughters away from the airlines as a career, as it’s not what it used to be.

It wouldn’t be fun - promise. Outside of the major roads, the Mustang is too wide for the average British street and we’re policed with speed cameras everywhere. In the States, it’s a normal car - it’s an everyman’s car. In the UK it would be an enthusiast’s second car that came out in the summer for shows.

To you good folks in the States, the Mustang can be had as an entry level car up to road-melting goodness. You can buy the base convertible version for your college-age daughter or, once you’ve ditched that no-good cheating husband, you can use the settlement to buy a Shelby and go full-on Thelma and Louise. Or track
