Another indie publisher is http://www.vividpub.com , best know for Dreamkeepers (which the publisher couple makes), but is also publishing Uberquest and Zoophobia (last one surprised me). Note that each web comic is written/drawn by a different person.

One big problem with that: The big companies have money and lawyers to spare for suing anyone and their families for DMCA abuse.

And what happens when the companies don't pay the artists?
