Like all stoner comedies, will probably be about as amusing as hearing your stoner friends tell stories about all the wacky things they got up to stoned last weekend.

This is just too ridiculous for words. For one thing, you would have to be incredibly short-sighted to not notice that Beyonce is black. Passing means just that - living as a white person and no-one thinking you aren't. Without even going into the poisonous, self-cannabalising "not black enough" debate, which others…
Funnily enough I have no problem whatsoever with seeing a movie alone, if it's a classy one (blockbuster nonsense needs to be seen in groups IMO). But I think I got used to it when I would review for the student paper and take a notebook, so now it doesn't seem weird.
Youth is wasted on the young. And the young are wasted on hand sanitiser.
Yeah, and when you call Mitt Romney an imbecile you are calling him a mentally disabled person with an IQ between 25 and 50. Words change.
No way, seriously? And I bet not one of them is even Irish. Psshh... Thanks for the heads up, though, should I ever make it across the pond.
I think this where the problem lies. It was always my understanding that there were words and expressions that are considered shocking and no longer at all acceptable in polite discourse "Jewing down" "n-gger in the woodpile" etc and those which have become part of the language and lost their original sense - to welsh…
So you forego any word that has its roots in any form of stereotype or bigotry?
Thanks. I'm not. I would be infuriated if someone was using the word to insult a Gypsy person - which they wouldn't, because no-one even associates it with that anymore, which is my point. The history of insults is fascinating and also generally deeply-rooted in xenophobia and superstitious stereotyping of others. If…
I don't agree with that. There's no way you can say jewed without knowing the origins of that. For one thing, it's right there in the word - whereas gyp is just as commonly written jip or gip and clearly no longer popularly believed to relate to Roma people specifically. And for another thing, the pernicious…
I don't know, I'm not really buying this one. Words lose their connotations, that's how language works. Basically ALL of our words for stupidity derive from Victorian era classifications for mentally disabled children - moron, cretin, idiot etc etc. and although the history behind them is absolutely heartbreaking I…
I am a little sceptical of the race angle here. Maybe what she says is true, but surely a lot more of it has to do with community? I imagine the kinds of families where FGM is practised are living in very closed-off, cloistered communities where it would be extremely difficult for the police to act. Other community…
Oh gosh, what a missed opportunity. It's so chilling and yet strangely fascinating to think what the hell might be going on there. There's a fantastic book called Nothing to Envy which uses the testimony of escapees to build a good picture of what normal life is like for those outside the show capital.
This may well sound faintly idiotic, but does it not seem like we're getting a lot of photos from North Korea at the moment? Especially of lady traffic controllers, but that's possibly a different discussion. Before, I would excitedly pore over obscure blogs to see pictures of NK and now we seem to be practically…
Did they by any chance get married in the 80s? Just a nagging hunch...
I have gathered that this refers to pot. That is all.
I don't get how a James Bond movie can be so strapped for funding that they would make such a fundamental, tasteless and sure-to-be-ridiculed change in the franchise. Am I being daft? Couldn't they manage to cobble together some pyrotechnics without prostrating itself quite so cravenly to Heineken?
See my reply to Little Time Bomb. This is probably for the good, but the constant references to how these guys AREN'T TERRORISTS is a just a tad on the nose.
No, of course not. In fact, I would prefer to see a film which showed how normal most Muslim Americans are by... showing that. Not by constant banging-you-in-the-face reminders that THESE GUYS AREN'T LIKE TERRORISTS, Y'ALL! And yes, I probably am being naive about the sheer levels of ignorance Muslims are facing in…
