I’d suggest you familiarize yourself with Ms. Reich’s body of work. As others have said, she doesn’t often traffic in the kind of dreary hipster cynicism we see over on Gawker.

It’s hard to introduce new characters into an established ensemble movie. Look at the TNG movies and imagine if they tried to spend time to really establish those new helms people that showed up in every movie. Now make the new helms person an LGBT character without it just being an obvious token.

I was thinking of the bi angle yesterday as well when I saw Takei’s argument. Sulu had a wife in the original timeline, that doesn’t have to mean he’s straight. In this timeline he just happened to meet a man he loved instead of a woman.

Best bet: Make an existing character queer AND a new queer character. Make Sulu bi and the new alien lady a lesbian. No tokenism there and no revisionism of the past!
