Aluminum doesn’t rust. Aluminum creates a layer of aluminum oxide when it comes in contact with air and this layer of material prevents water from attacking the metal underneath. If you sand or otherwise remove the oxide layer, it will slowly “regenerate” itself, restoring the anti-rust properties.
