Im using a 6 with ios11 and it runs fine. I dont know why it would be on it’s last legs, about the only thing that can go bad is the battery which is not that hard to replace.

Also if you hold down on the flashlight button it will bring up a slider to flashlight intensity. I dont know if this was in previous versions, I just noticed it with 11.

The other problem is that there is limited amount of memory allocated for the text boxes, not just the physical dialog box size. The Lunar: Silver Star Story game set had a making of disc with it that talked about all the tricks they had to do to get english text optimized to work with the games dialog system.
