In the book they lost one Alfa to a runaway meltdown because the captian pushed the engines to hard, The one in the Movie was destroyed not by the “killed by their own torpedo” trope, but because the Masive Typhoon, rammed the Alfa at full speed and ruptured its hull. The Red October only had damage to its outer hull
