They’re a big win for gamers, it forces devs to at least make sure you’re not going to hit enough bugs or broken features to turn you off for two whole hours.
Demo doesn’t have to be out early or even at launch. They can wait the 3 months after launch to drop it. Sure it sucks but this is good for consumers and if you cannot stand by your game, too bad. It isn’t like Sony won’t be affected as well.
I think this is way too much of a zero-sum argument. You are working on the assumption (from your first comment) that demos are ineffectual at actually widening a market for a game - that the only people who will play a demo are already planning to buy it.
As someone that has purchased games, solely because the demo “looked interesting” I reject this statement wholesale.
“the only way a demo changes their opinion is they decide NOT to buy it after playing the demo.”
While you’re right in those points, I think demos are sufficiently pro consumer to justify those points.
If you didn’t pick up an xbox one and/or a 360, I highly recommend it.
I pretty much felt the same way. Also, I don’t even have a 4K tv yet. I wasn’t in a hurry at all, the only system-seller for me was that State of Decay 3 which is next-gen console exclusive, but that’s still at least a couple years away. But then I got a Series S as a gift (from my job!) and the faster (to the point…
I have an X and bought my wife an S when Gamestop had a good trade in on an Xbox One X a bit ago. She is super happy with it, and its a great gamepass machine.
The S is cheap enough (at least right now) to be a second console/game pass machine...
Has MSFT just been able to secure more production than Sony to make them more available? I imagine that if there were more PS5s, then they would also be selling very well. I still think of how I got lucky securing my Series X on preorder morning, refreshing my browsers on multiple outlets and finally getting a…
Other than MOST people I absolutely love my Xbox One X and played it like double the time of my PS4, even though I would say, that the latter had the better exclusive games, especially for an JRPG fan. So I naturally was pretty excited, that it is now called “easy to buy”. I have not tried to get one for MONTHS, so I…
Not the exact same situation, but the inverse is true too. I have multiple games in my ipad that don’t work anymore because they were never updated to work with newer iOS versions, and it fucking sucks. Don’t get me wrong, this is still Apple’s fault, they should include some way for these legacy apps to still work,…
Man so negative. I've so far enjoyed a few things from April. Just report the games. No need to be a downer.
This is a statistical average across many games. It only shows that demos cut into sales by 50%, but doesn't say why. There are numerous reasons why. People don't only refuse to buy games because they're crappy. It could be a good game in its own right, but some customers probably wouldn't buy it because those…
So, you have no data and this is just guess-work on your part. And I'm pretty sure publishers and devs care about making money in the long-term, and not just within the next 3 months. Not to mention, there's data on everything, any company capable of running Oracle or MySQL datamines the hell of every piece of data…
I'd be wary in trusting that data. It seems like there are too many uncontrolled variables which are likely skewing the results. I think sales figures for before and after demos were added to the six+ month old games mentioned would be much more meaningful.
