BMWs, since the Mid-late ‘90s (E46, E39, E38 and later) use one of the ABS wheel speed sensors to give speed info for the speedometer. For example, the E39 5-series (97-03) uses the left rear ABS sensor to feed the speedo.

I assume this is a rather common practice for most/all makes, these days.
