“Out, out, brief candle! Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
Two minutes of the good stuff:
I’m not a fan of JAJ’s trump either. Don’t get me wrong--it’s obviously very good. But that’s the problem. I avoid coverage of trump like the plague because I can’t stand do look at him or hear him, so I’m not trying to see an accurate depiction of him on a show where I’m trying to relax and laugh. Just leave him…
Should forever now be “sideways hanging meatballs”
The original cast was only seven, but they got regular contributions from Franken & Davis, the muppets, Albert Brooks, Gary Weis, Mr Bill, Guido Sarducci, etc. They also reused filmed sketches with the cast and sometimes featured multiple musical guests and more than two songs. 21 is too many, but it’s not hard to…
The elevator scene in Only Murders in the Building was peak Martin.
Yeah Only Murders in the Building is the best thing either Martin/Short have done in 20 years.
I do feel like Cecily got some great showcases around 2016-2019 or so, but the last few seasons it’s felt like she has been in and out a lot. This last episode reminded me of how fresh and fun she can still be after a decade on the show, in a way that Kate and Aidy can’t quite be.
Piggy-backing off your comment: As someone who considers the Steve Martin who made those first three stand-up albums to be one of his “comedy quasars” (along with Bob Newhart), I can’t recommend the audiobook version of his “Born Standing Up” biography enough. One doesn’t get enough chances to hear a master craftsman…
He's a fantastic writer. Even better than a stand-up. The collected essays, the plays, the scripts, the novels... I love his writing.
In case anyone who matters is reading: in light of how the staff was screwed over, I think with the end of these reviews I can officially stop visiting the AV Club.
I need to start watching that. I’ve read nothing but good things.
Yes! Cecily Strong has been my favorite performer on the show for years. Every time I turn on the news I think “oh, Cecily could play the HELL out of this whackjob.” She’s just consistently hilarious. And I’ve seen her a few times on the street in NYC and she’s absolutely gorgeous in person.
You’re not wrong. Peak Martin for me was like 76-82 but he still maintained his sense of comedic irony and life’s little curve balls in much of his writing over the years but leaned more into romantic comedy later on.
This could have been a stronger episode with no Five Timers Club sketch. And of course, remove that musical number entirely (as I assume those don’t get a lot of replay on YouTube anyhow). Please Don’t Destroy should have been Cut For Time, ideally. And really, LCD Sound System only needed one performance; as their…
Ssd that you are departing, but happy to hear you will continue undaunted somewhere, someday.
Because of Dowd, Vishnevetsky, and sometimes jesse, film coverage–specifically reviews–were pretty much the only thing that kept alive the old open-minded-but-critical spirit of AV Club. Depressing to see it go away entirely.
