The weirdest thing to me is how much Diet Coke’s flavor changes in different states. Coke Zero, Diet Dr. Pepper, and even (ugh) Diet Pepsi all taste about the same whether they’re cans, bottles or fountain.

Yep. I am not a trained palate, and the difference is plain as day to me. I happen to like Diet Dr Pepper the best of all of them, too. Maybe it means I need to learn about wine more? :-)

As a former cooking teacher ( and chef), I can tell you that taste is very subjective. I myself do agree, Zero is by far the better tasting drink, but quite large part of the population will not taste the difference.
