I don’t know enough about phones to give a certain answer, but looking at the spec sheet for my gyroscopeless, AR-incompatible phone (2015 Moto G) I’d guess they use the accelerometer instead.

Your phone is probably lacking a gyroscope, which the AR needs. It’s a bummer.

Sometimes it’ll pick up that you’re walking when it’s running but it’s very hit and miss. I walk about 5km a day to/from work with GO open constantly but it’s only registered 1.7km walking since Tuesday.
