I worked at a major grocery store a long time ago, and it had a similar policy — strict that you absolutely could not accept tips from anybody, and as a grocery bagger, it came up now and then. I don’t know if you would have been fired, but the bosses seemed pretty intense about it.

My sister worked at Mervyn’s as a department manager, and they were required to do the Hokey Pokey at team meetings, every day, to make sure everyone was “energized.” She was already the Angriest Woman Alive, and that sure didn’t help.

I stand by what I wrote. There are Black men who feel they are on a more level field with White men if they have a White woman by their side and they want to show them off to the other White men (a “look I’m just like you” moment). It’s not new and it’s not going away.
