I think the HBO docuseries on Elvis does a great overview of many of these points but also points out that when we talk about stealing, that means taking full credit for things and erasing their origins. Alfa Romeo had a racing driver named Ugo Sivocci. He was decent, but never won a race until he started painting a cloverleaf inside a diamond on his race car. He then went on to win the Targa Florio in 1923. He would then have this symbol painted on any car he raced.
