It's only a misnomer because league is not typically used to describe depth, however depth is a length as is width and height, and a league is a measure of length. A real misnomer is people saying dry vs wet measure as opposed to volume/weight measure.

Unfortunately your missing the manufacturing side of the issue. Being able to reproduce an STL with rapid prototyping is easy. Being able to use that rapid prototype to create a negative cast and have that negative create a valid cast is neither easy nor cheap.

This doesn't take into account the compression of the iPhone. If you consider it like a spring, i.e. a solid brick of aluminum, you could get a better approximation of the force felt by the internal components. Assuming that the iPhone is incompressible is very conservative.
