She literally says “They’re fine for teen girls.” Which is the part everyone who’s objecting to it is objecting to, because she’s telling on herself there. It’s fine if you don’t read it that way, but I do.

WHOOPS. I googled “Common Read program” and must have seen “dakota” and thought it was the same, because I was also wrongly thinking of North Dakota. My bad.

“I really don’t see how it’s anything terribly controversial to say that Dessen’s work doesn’t exist at the same level the rest of these works.”

“Most adults (particularly those, like English majors, who are avid and adventurous readers) would find that kind of thing boring and a waste of precious reading time.”

“I doubt that there wasn’t a single novel beloved by teen girls on that list...”

I’m on Dessen’s side here, but I still think this is probably a great idea for all famous and semi-famous people.

Look, this is why this shit is a big deal. YA novels aren’t some kind of frivolous bullshit that isn’t worth reading because they aren’t The Great American Novel. If you’re at a university to challenge yourself academically, the Common Read isn’t the only place you can do that, and telling everyone that you joined a

I think maybe it read like I was shitting on the Instant Pot, which I’m totally not! I think it’s great for a wide variety of people, for a wide variety of purposes. It’s just not for me, is all. :)

I agree that it helps and promotes cooking. I don’t think you’re understanding my objection to it. I find cooking something that takes 8 hours to be rewarding and a relaxing way to spend a day. I don’t want it to be done in 4 hours, I want to and like spending the time with something braising in my oven or simmering

I don’t think that is the whole point of an InstaPot...I see far more people making quick weeknight dinners in them than I do making 16 hour recipes in them.

I am childless and single, and I love cooking. My brother, the youngest of the three of us, is also childless and single and loves cooking. The other day my mom asked if my brother would like an Instant Pot for Christmas, and I had to explain to her that because neither of us has to cook for anyone, we enjoy the labor

Oh man, I hadn’t thought about brussels sprouts! Of all the things to get me to buy an air fryer...that one might be the one that tips the balance.

I convinced my mom to buy one of the countertop pull-through sharpeners after my brother about cut off his hand trying to use her dull knives. I would never have gotten her to take them all in (and I don’t leave near her, so taking them in myself isn’t an option unless I want to waste vacation time doing it), so this

I can’t tell if it’s the writing, the performance, or the direction that’s making Lyra so uncompelling. I know Dafne Keen is a capable actress, but even the movie’s flawed version of Lyra was better than the dud we’re getting here.

Thank you so much! I’ve actually not been able to refine my opinions much on stouts in general, simply because so many of them have coffee notes, and I cannot stress how much I hate coffee flavor. I’m very excited to try this one and further refine my palate. :)

I trust you, but I hate coffee flavoring, so I wanted to just get a second opinion before I spent $25 on a six four pack and realized you had a higher tolerance for coffee than I do. :)

The review says very little coffee flavor...can you confirm/deny?

I’m a little confused. No characters we know are in the trailer in the article. The longer one I saw early had Tessa Thompson in it as well as Thandie Newton.

Great review, Joelle!

I have a head of roasted garlic with some butter and crusty bread for dinner on Fridays sometimes. Even if you don’t know what to do with it at first, you get the hang of it pretty quickly and then it’s the best thing ever.
