Thanks everyone. I was thinking about getting toner refills rather than full replacement cartridges. Any thoughts about pros & cons of those two methods? I figure a new cartridge is good for a refill or two, but after that, probably good to get a "new" cartridge and start the refill cycle again.

yep - I have a friend who swears by the lookup table method. I should start using it. Your lookup table is nice, but there's too much space between each of those easily-remembered rows IMHO.

I've long thought there should be such an app. I hope they're working on being able to figure out the bill by taking a picture of the check and then manually tallying which item belongs to which person.

Recommendations are going to depend on how much you use it. If you're printing 1000 pages a week, then you'll need something hefty. A few pages a day, and you can go with a little inkjet. Also, be aware that the biggest cost (aside from time futzing around when the thing breaks) is ink and toner refills.
