I’m 59 and can confirm that getting older doesn’t mean the bullshit stops. It takes a different tone, one that starts out convinced that it’s target needs to hear that she’s still pretty hot for an old lady, and ends with threats of violence and ageist insults when the target doesn’t simper and coo in response. This

I have, from time to time, thrown concern for my safety to the winds and told these smug fuckers exactly that - nobody cares what you think, nobody cares which way your dick points. And they have NO ability to cope with this. They stutter and flail. They turn bright red (yes, they’re white dudes 99% of the time). It

Her eyes just say it all in that pic. Total annoyance and rapanoia.

This is a great piece and I think speaks to the larger problem of guru culture. The Yoga Is Dead Podcast did an episode on it that would likely resonate with people who struggle with the desire to find that one person who will make everything possible and then find themselves either disappointed when the guru is trash

Absolutely, what a beautiful response. Her gorgeous smile, her serenity, the fact that she neither was defensive nor blaming. Something I wish I could emulate, but I don't have that confidence or peace when attacked.

I was introduced to Tabiath Brown by a cooking video by Jennifer Garner, both of them combined is the most wholesome content on Insta.

Where is Mrs. Browns Masterclass?

Okay, this thread might be dead at this point, but I have to historicize, because it’s what I do ;-). I agree— “Fat Bastard” couldn’t fly now, and shouldn’t. “Fat Monica” was a horribly misogynist as well as fatphobic characterization. But “fat” as comedy has historical roots that I still think make sense—place “fat”

What’s even more insane is that, at 12:30PM, he has a five o’clock shadow.

Jordan is what makes it work. He’s an incredible straight man. Conan’s humor can be silly and even cruel, but in the face of Jordan’s utter unflappability, it becomes priceless.

I love the Espresso one the best. Not only does he leave the machine right outside his office but he also keeps the display instructions in Italian.

Oh there was tooootally a point to the “Betty gets fat” storyline....

Especially since Betty was a fat child whose mother poked her with sharpened pencils. They did a lot with that role.

That’s what I remember too. The epiphany was that Henry still loved her with the weight, even if she felt shitty about it. It was supposed to be a contrast to image obsessed Don marrying Meghan.

I think it served as a teeny tiny moment of growth for Betty when she saw her new world with Henry didn’t crumble because her looks were notperfect”. But then again, when she was dying her biggest request for Sally was to make sure her corpse was made to look attractive. So maybe not much growth.

Right!?

I also have a bone to pick with this section:

Betty Draper is such a good example of the fat suit used effectively to serve the purpose of story and character.

Yes, I agree. I think there is some nuance to actors transforming into characters even though Hazel made some excellent points. I don’t remember it totally, maybe watching it back today I wouldn’t like it so much, but as someone who was on the thinner side when I was younger and am now firmly on the fat side, I

I have a much easier time accepting prosthetics in a drama where a movie where they are used to inhabit a realistic character, or a character based on a real person. Sarah Paulson and Christian Bale are two of the best actors working, and I have a hard time faulting them for doing everything possible to bring a
