It depended entirely on your taste in movies.

So why don't they shut down comments for human beings and keep the movie comments open? It's so annoying…

You said it perfectly. The internet is genuinely becoming a dumber place to be, and good content genuinely harder to find. In this case it's deliberately being destroyed in hopes of a little shot term boost on their money-making "social media" channels. Unreal.

Movies that have a lot of value- and little pop culture clout- were almost completely free of the nonsense trolling. For documentary films, you rarely came across the type of "abuse" IMDb alleges it can't control.

I really liked (and still used) the message boards. Where else can you go that acts like a database for comments on film.
