Visual creations that attempt to simulate a certain reality by playing tricks with perspective in order to make a the viewer feel like they are in a place other than the one they’re currently physically residing in, can to an extent be related to VR.

You’re really going to use a title stating complete nonsense like that? Murals and paintings are not virtual reality. Why stop there? Wouldn’t the first cave painting be the actual “roots” of VR, if what you’re saying has any merit?

Tell me more about this “cutting-edge, immersive technology!” Maybe this time point to VR’s roots in writing, where people imagine entire worlds, characters, places, and events all in their head. Just like VR!
