I feel like toxic positivity has made the empathy/sympathy quagmire worse. So many people just don’t get the difference between “I feel that way sometimes too” and “I’m sorry you feel that way.” Throw in “That’s sad! Don’t feel that way!” and I’m not surprised collective mental health seems to be at an all time low.

Simple. Instead of saying “you should love yourself!”, tell them the reasons why you love them.
