Really, I think it’s just worded very badly. When I taught U.S. History (albeit to 8th graders) we spent a lot of time on slavery and the realities of slavery and one assignment was how could a nation that was so focused on Christianity also justify slavery and why they were wrong.

I don’t know, I think “how did white people defend slavery?” would be an interesting question that could be useful for drawing parallels to modern day white supremacist tactics and institutions.
