I’d say the U.S. hasn’t viewed trucks as primarily utilitarian vehicles since...1990(?) I credit the ‘88 GM trucks for breaking the truck square design mold, the ‘94 Ram for making them distinctive, and the '00 Tundra for making more competition and forcing reliability to the front of minds of shoppers.

I get what you’re saying. But, I think this is not really damage, but more about the software being in a bad state. It sounds like the sensor (the hardware) isn’t damaged. Rather, the software misinterpreted the data and got stuck thinking there’s no reason to deploy airbags at a later time. Otherwise, disconnecting…
