Wyatt is clueless and if there’s someone who’s embarrassing himself, it’s him. Here in Europe, only the idiots and the mentally challenged could put a car in neutral, before braking.

True, but has nothing to do with the presently debated issue.
if you aren’t a moron
So for you this deals with an automatic car? You sure? Really sure?
Your comment is idiotic.
Of course it’s not mechanically wrong... it’s wrong to lose the engine braking action when needed and it’s wrong to be unable to suddenly accelerate, if it should become necessary. Our driving schools teach that a car must be put in neutral only when almost still, not 10 or 20 meters before that point. This is the…
I wrote that the paragraph is for an automatic, you moron.. but it’s issues are perfectly valid for a manual gear as well, you disgraced imbecile... it’s evident that you are not able to understand what you read.
It’s not a matter of sparing the brake pads, it’s a matter of safe driving.
OK. If I well understand I think that what you write is correct, because it’s not just a coasting in neutral, but a totally acceptable use of the manual gear.

This is an interesting point of view. Indeed, we see from the news (of course excluding the doped or boozed drivers)::
Indeed. That Wyatt dude should stop telling absurdities, and maybe start giving cooking suggestions instead.
if you want to protect your clutch and transmission long-term, you should shift into neutral, release the clutch, and then hit the brakes.
You just read better my post.
Coasting is wrong by definition. Period. You brake and push the clutch when the car is still, to shift to neutral. And you keep your foot on the brake, or you pull the hand brake. Period.
Coasting is wrong. Period. And I don’t believe that you driving examiner could have approved it, without having drunk four beers before your license exam.
Manuals aren’t as reliable as modern automatics too.
If Jalopnik recommended to coast in neutral, then it made a serious error that shouldn’t happen in such a media, nominally dedicated to the good car culture.
In our European driving schools, we are taught to brake and disengage the clutch at the last moment, just before stopping. That is how I learned to drive. The mighty Internet Tubes of New Zealand are agree with me:
That’s totally right. Happy to see that there are still some reasonable people like you.
