HBO clearly took their time reviewing Our Flag Means Death and so this doesn't surprise me.

I like different adaptations and I don’t think a movie needs to be identical to the source material. However, the message here feels very heroines must be scrappy and quirky, that Austen’s actual character is too mundane to have an interesting love story.

The show has never been linear in its references, as if the whole decade is happening at once. So, they're doing their own never-ending homage.
