Also, it could be that BMO is just pretending to be male so that he can participate in the Noire style story. I mean, the male character is always the main character in the Noire. He couldn't be a female main character since that would probably be a Noire parody rather than an authentic Noire styled story.

Personally, I think the reason why Baby Snaps wanted to be a "Princess" was that in the land of Ooo there really aren't any "good" Kings. I mean, the Flame king seems destructive while the Ice King is pretty crazy. All the princesses though seem to be quite nice and understanding.
