Does Garbage’s “#1 Crush” count?

supposedly, my sheepdog would pull me by the diaper away from the road when i was a toddler.

“It’s boring...

Said the owner of a golden retriever that looks exactly like every single golden retriever that has ever graced this planet.

Very tired of false Christians who base their faith on a Reader's Digest Condensed Bible with missing pages.

Just to confirm, this is the sport that features sideline entertainment from women dressed in short short skirts and/or hot pants shaking their asses and boobs right? Yeah I thought so

Ooh now I want to hear your take on how Song of the South is fine because Uncle Remus is a “unique, well rounded character”

“bloating the cast”

And I see a lot of people saying “well, what about this character...” and honestly, the fact that Apu is a problem doesn’t mean that there aren’t other characters that need to be assessed, but many of them (Akira, Cookie Kwan, Bumblebee Man) simply don’t have the same profile.

It’s a situation unique to The Simpsons because of how long it’s been around, not many shows survive 30 years of culture. That’s an eternity of societal shift; think of what was kosher in American society 30 years before The Simpsons, there was definitely things in 1959 you could and should not do in 1989.

It’s pretty disingenuous to pretend Apu wasn’t clearly conceived of as a convenience store owner with a strong “funny” Indian accent, and that those two facts remain his most consistent traits.

I’m pretty sure I demonized neither Hank Azaria nor the show in saying that the depiction of Apu hasn’t aged well in 30 years. It’s natural for things not to age well. As I mentioned elsewhere, the show has had his nephew on the show (voiced by an Indian-American actor) so there are options to continue to have

A bunch of Indian actors were trying to get work in 1989. The only roles they tended to get cast in were taxi drivers for men and nurses for women. Or generic foreign bad guy. I have a close friend who tried out for a lot of roles in the ‘90s, but the roles went to white people. She was finally cast in Nevermind

In this thread: a lot of guys who haven’t watched new Simpsons episodes in years suddenly caring about new Simpsons episodes

it was a progressive move back when the prevalence of negative stereotypes was so abundant that having an indian character be respected or really represented at all was considered a thoughtful approach. the funny accent, i think, was the silly hook they used to subvert whatever one-dimensional stereotype you thought

You’re stepping over my point, which is that how the character voice is inflected matters in terms of how well it’s received. Hibbert might be based off Cosby, but the voice is quite clearly and notably *not* a Cosby impression and generally lacks the characteristics of stereotypically “black” accents, aside from

Here’s a bright idea: you could watch the documentary that Hari Kondabolu made with the help of many Indians in entertainment and find out why exactly they think it’s racist.

Fuck off, racist

“It’s okay to think it wasn’t malicious and also think this is the right call.”

You know what? Fuck you. I’m 2nd generation Indian (parents from India). Do you know how hard it was growing up being compared to Apu every single fucking day, in almost every possible setting? Sure, stereotypes exist for everyone, but for a country of 1 billion people, there was a SINGLE fucking instance in all of

It’s not a shocker that something from 1989 hasn’t aged great. It’s okay to think it wasn’t malicious and also think this is the right call.
