I think Ellen ultimately suffered from trying to create a product built on being nice and kind. People, particularly the media, delight in a facade of goodness crumbling. They did with Rosie O’Donnell’s show in the 90's, with Ellen now, and I assume they will do it with Kelly Clarkson in 10 years or so. Mr. Rogers is

On Disney hahahahahahaha

I loved those first few “weird encounter survivor” sketches, but thought it turned to shit when they started making the main joke just her listing rhyming names for her anus & genitalia. To be clear, I had no problem with how dirty is supposedly was, just considered it wildly lameass humor that couldn’t touch the way

I though the Mr Dooley sketch was kind of funny, but what is the target audience of SNL, and how old are the writers? Weekend at Bernies and 9 to 5 are 33 and 42 year old movies (respectively). It seems like there have been several instances this season where the pop-culture references they frame a sketch around are

That reminds me of the scene in the first season of The West Wing when Leo’s wife was leaving him because he prioritized his job over his home life.

Zeljko Ivanek was in a pretty interesting documentary a few years ago called That Guy...Who Was in that Thing (or something like that) about character actors and how they manage to cobble together careers based on sometimes incredibly inconsistent small roles--jobs they pick up to ends meet, help from family like one

Yes, I’m sure Mike Myers is trying to make a statement on “White Male Obsolescence”.

I can’t think of too many other “that guy” actors anymore, but I’m watching less TV and movies these days.

There needs to be a Character Actor Hall of Fame. So many actors who were an indelible part of our youth who’s names, for the most part, we can’t remember.

“Much later, studies showed that women having an abortion were 3-14 times more likely to die in the next year when compared to women giving birth.”

I’m still waiting for someone to explain what the hell happened with Margueles and Punjabi in the final seasons of The Good Wife. Having to shoot joint scenes separately using green screen, etc., feels wildly unprofessional, and I’m amazed that no one involved has ever spilled the beans about what was happening. Those

You’re SOOO brave!

A man gets attacked and all people can say is ‘Fuck Dave Chapelle’ Yes, the upstanding black and white moral folk of the AVclub comments strike again. I tell you if Hitler was trans youse guys probably would’ve let the holocaust go.

Well, this is a mixed blessing, a terrific article on a truly brilliant piece of TV, and some smart observations on the added footage which I never noticed before, but it’s your last piece!

I can’t guarantee it 100%, but I strongly suspect this will be my last ever comment at this site, after near two decades. I will miss your work, Gwen, and this site as it was.

Great send off article!  Wave goodbye to the smart site you started with and hold your head up to start another chapter.  G/O is a shitshow that doesn’t deserve your attention.

The 70's Columbo episodes worked so much better then the 90's ones. I think one of the overlooked reasons was the sound design had changed. There is something comforting about 70's tv sound design. It almost has an ASMR quality to it. On a side note did anyone really like McLoud?

Damn, one of the few worthwhile writers left over on this website. Guess it’s Barsanti all the way down from here.

Honestly, I was more of a Jim Hutton as Ellery Queen kinda kid. He was a bit more Encyclopedia Brown to me, but then I segued right into Rockford Files so :/

It's a shame how the powers that be have gutted this site so badly.
