Because the Color Purple doesn’t hold the same place in white people’s minds and memories doesn’t mean Banks is ignoring your existence or not including Black women in her definition of women. It means that she’s operating from her own identity and perspective, just like you are and just like all people do. One movie

The Color Purple is one movie out of a long career, and it’s not the type of big-budget adventure movie that Spielberg is most associated with. She didn’t have to literally forget Black women existed in Hollywood to forget that Spielberg directed The Color Purple, and one movie out of many doesn’t really invalidate

No, it’s not because she expressed a viewpoint that people disagree with.

It’s that her personal viewpoint is impacting her ability to fairly review the plays for their intended audience. It is a pretty safe bet that Pass Over’s creative team is targeting their play towards people who are at least open to the idea

So while I do think we need more influential female critics, maybe not this particular female critic. Those were some pretty damning quotes! I was expecting her statements to be a bit more dogwhistle and a little less overt than explicitly supporting racial profiling (incoherently, at that)!

But patterns are important, too. I think it’s pretty fucked up if there’s no way to take the other accusations as supporting evidence.

Wow! That is an amazing display of stereotypical Millennial behavior. Please tell me that Alina is actually a 50-year old career vet.

I wonder when Alina will understand that her problem wasn’t that she didn’t want to sit at a desk when she had no work but that she lied. As an employee, you have the option of

She still identifies as gender neutral but AFAIK, is still using female pronouns.

Conflicting accounts. One version has she was stopped by her higher ups. Another version has that she’s not even present.

You’d think it wouldn’t be this hard to get basic facts of a filmed event with multiple witnesses, but that’s all part of why this story should never have been released, especially with names

Yes, I agree. I feel like what we should all be focusing on is how disgusting and unethical it is that entertainment media released this story so early with DeMario’s and Corinne’s names attached. And while I do feel bad for DeMario’s name being out there when it’s so unclear what actually happened, I feel much worse

It is very frustration how much Jezebel and other blogs seem to basically repackage a single news article, rarely adding anything other than a twist of snark or more pop culture friendly phrases

I don’t think second graders should be learning about paragraphs through that kind of vocabulary for sure, but I remember using paragraphs in second grade back when I was a kid (albeit perhaps not well!). Hence, my surprise.

The normalization of violence against political opponents started with the embrace of the KKK as a means of re-establishing defacto white supremacy in the South. It’s gone quiescent over various times in our history but never disappeared, and the recent revitalization started with the Teabaggers/Tea Party embrace of

I get the developmental inappropriateness of third graders writing 5-paragraph opinion essays, but it’s developmentally inappropriate for second graders to write paragraphs?

Yes, that’s exactly what’s explained in the Washington Post article on the school! They also had a dedicated college counselor, who helped them identify appropriate colleges and navigate the admissions process.

I share your concerns having also witnessed how predatory colleges can prey on underprepared low-income students. However, I read the linked article and (IMHO) it did a better job explaining why this is such an important accomplishment for these students and what type of support they received to make this happen.

The impression I got from the Miley interview was the reverse... that Miley’s then is closer to who she really is, but her now is putting on a look that she thinks will get country music to be more open to her message. That’s why I’ve been surprised by the critiques of Miley’s look seeming performative in its

We failed as a nation when Sandy Hook wasn’t enough for meaningful gun control legislation.

I’m not sure where to begin if you think that article seriously puts forth a compelling argument about no one caring about protocol. It is comparing apples and oranges actions... actually, it’s comparing cats and oranges because apples and oranges are at least both in the same category of fruit.

 What Jonah Goldberg is

I think it’s a bit different for Melton given the Christian part of her identity. There aren’t many high profile progressive Christians, much less high-profile progressive gay Christians.

Sometimes it is worth it. Sometimes it’s not.

Some marriages are flat out abusive. Some marriages may not quite cross the line to abusive, but they take disproportionately from one party. Or both parties may simply grow in a way to where they are their better selves apart than together.
