Was this you, BRIMSG?! http://www.theonion.com/articles/4-cop…
Amen. I know some people might appreciate them, but it just smacks of coercion.
YES!!! I haven't even read the rest of the article yet; as soon as I finished that sentence I immediately jumped to the comments to join the Tortall love fest. Amazing.
Holy shit, this is amazing. I think I love her.
WILL YOU PLEASE provide me with a list of genders, ages, races, disabilities, kinks, personal hygiene habits, pets, movie characters, hegemonies, and designer labels that it is ok to make fun of?!?!
Yes, absolutely! I have so many friends who've been shocked to hear I'm an introvert, since I'm totally comfortable being sociable (when I'm feeling like it). But I completely agree— you can't underestimate the value of just being able to shut the door!
Fortunately, he's very understanding of my introversion! If I go into a room and close the door, he's very good at just leaving me alone. Or I'll just say outright "Hey I'm really feeling like some me-time this evening", and he'll go for a run/bike ride/ski or visit a friend's house.

Excellent advice!
ETA: wait, was this directed at my shit talk about rape apologists?
This is absolutely true, and yet the flip side of it is— would your coworkers be any less deserving of being listened to and treated with respect if they were *not* very cultured, intelligent and worldly?
Sigh, you're right. Fuck classism.
ETA: hehee, I'm getting so much glee out of swearing now.
Well, that actually seems like an entirely reasonable response :)
But what if I was like, "Man, JayRice, rape culture is fucken terrible! These assholes keep claiming that rapists aren't responsible for their own goddamn actions, and that shit is destructive and insulting to men and women both. We gotta tear that bullshit down!"
Surely there's a big difference between swearing AT you and using swear words, right?
Dingdingding! Exactly what I was trying to get at, in a much less succinct way.
Respectfully, I don't find much weight in the "swearing makes you sound low-class" argument. For 1) it's an obviously classist and privileged argument. But for 2) if you are a reasonably intelligent person listening to someone talk, you should be able to discern the validity and intelligence of their comments…
