I’m not sure what this says about me, but honestly one of the funniest parts to me is when Halloran catches an ax to the chest. He flies all the way out there, gets through the snowstorm, and immediately gets annihilated for his efforts.
Diabolique is definitely dope, and going in unspoiled for that particular film is a big advantage.
One of Kubrick’s greatest talents, which I think not enough people fully recognize, was his way of combining different tones within one work so that they’re all valid and don’t cancel each other out.
I’m sorry you had to go through all of that, it sounds awful. So please don’t think I’m trivializing it when I say that like IV I find The Shining to be pretty damn funny in spots, and certainly intentionally so.
