I thought AJ was a woman in his first episode as well, but looked the actor up online and figured it out at that point.  I think there was a reference to him being a man last week as well.

Amazingly, her natural singing voice is more high-pitched, like in Maybe this Dream. She was basically told that she needed to have a big brassy singing voice to break into musical theatre with her body type. So she developed the voice she uses in most of her songs

It was a clip they showed at cons and then put up on Youtube, it wasn’t in the CBS or Netflix versions of the show.
