They were hardly "random trolls". It was an organised and sustained campaign of harassment. Don't diminish the personal shit those assholes did over the course of a year over one dumb movie.

They really didn't. Mostly they just responded on their social media outlets to the horrific abuse and harassment (public, for all to see. And yes, it was disgusting and prolonged and personal), and the media ended up picking up on that and running with it.
