Because modern vehicles lack low end torque, combined with being excessively heavy, they feel extremely overworked. I don’t want some tiny 4 cylinder that’s wound tight everywhere just to move it’s fat ass.

They can take 87 just fine, you just need to use lead additive. Even 91/93 octane with ethanol is extremely detrimental to old car’s fuel systems.
