What makes these "gaudy" as opposed to, say, London's Shard, or the Gherkin? Or the Grande Arche de la Défense, for that matter? There are far more elaborate skyscrapers in Dubai, Beijing, Shanghai and in Eastern Europe (Azerbaijan) for that matter. The ST Towers look pretty clean to me.

I'm thinking the future of economy air travel is looking something like this
