No, not really. Once a registered student group has invited him to campus, university administration has almost no recourse to stop the speech. To do so would be a violation of the 1st amendment since public universities are state actors.

At the start of the Civil War it wasn’t “traitorous” to rebel because the states still saw themselves as sovereign.

You also left out the fact that he did eventually emancipate all of his father in law’s slaves. It just took five years instead of being done immediately, and Lee had to take a two year leave of absence from the army in order to manage the estate.

Actually, he generally opposed slavery and he and his wife funded efforts to free slaves in the South. He and his wife also set up a school for slaves (which was illegal, BTW). Most of the people don’t remember history class well enough to remember that fact. Mainly slavery was bad, the north won, and many people died is all that is remembered....

Lee is widely regarded to be an honorable man who was respected by both sides, and I don’t think he deserves condemnation.
