I wish that I had talked to my dad more about early Detroit. I know that he lived in Greektown when he first moved to Detroit when it was really a predominantly Greek area. He did not like living downtown though, he grew up on a farm so right after WW II my parents and older brothers moved to the suburbs.

My dad lived on the same floor as Diego and Frida while they were in Detroit. I asked him if he got to know them at all and he said no other than to say hi to them in passing. He did say that they were almost always arguing.

My Dad, who grew up in Virginia, left home when he was 14 was payrole foreman for the railroad by the time he was 16. Between 16 and 18 he learned to fly and bought his first plane. Of course this was 1924 when he was 14. So yes they did grow up fast way back then even into the 50's, 60's and 70's.
