Totally agree. The fish-pirates are still one of the best things this series has ever done. This film’s ghost pirates just felt like a more technologically advanced version of the great work that ILM did for the first film, which kinda made me sad.

No, it was eternal, with the captain getting to have a night on land every (I forget how many) years. Captain Squid was doing it wrong because he stopped doing his job while captain of the Flying Dutchman, out of anger at the Ocean goddess standing him up on his one night off, thus becoming fishy.

My biggest gripe about Pirates 2 & 3 is the Jones’s monster. They make a big deal of the Kraken and then kill it off screen. It’s a Kraken!! We should’ve had a truly epic battle with it.

Plus Elizabeth really comes into her own in Pirates 3, which is immensely rewarding considering her fainting had been a plot point at one time.

The only reason I liked the first was because of Barbossa. Are you saying Salazar is on that level? Jack just doesn’t do it for me.

Obligatory Pirates 3 is a really good piece of storytelling with characters that feel 3 dimensional and human (despite often not being human themselves) who each have their own individual motives which play off eachother nicely giving us a great piece of “I wonder who’s gonna do what” storytelling comment.
