The hair is really distracting and seems out of place on both color and texture. It’s really problematically trendy (and lazy) to fall back to that aesthetic. And getting that right I think would have made the overall look less questionable too.

Vampire.

My point is that it’s not mutually exclusive. You need both and we shouldn’t be sacrificing one for the other. And we’re in this situation for a variety of reasons, but focusing too much on the long game is not one of them, especially on issues involving the courts.

This is a losing long game. It makes it a stronger voting issue, which is essentially a big factor in how Trump won. One of the biggest challenges on the left is conceding when we need to lay groundwork that will help win elections long-term. There’s a lot that goes into supporting the ballot besides essential

Isn’t there a whole meme about Bianca Lawson playing a teenager forever. It’s like I can’t even understand what’s happening in Queen Sugar because I think she’s still in high school.

I am kinda annoyed at the word count around all of this. I mean, the Senate is essentially hiding documents from the public about a lifetime appointed Supreme Court nominee and no one is batting an eye? Instead Omorosa said some nonsense, film at 11. I’m not saying it lacks newsworthiness but let’s balance some

Anything is a good match with bourbon if I’m in the mood for it is what I say!

I’m looking forward to people captioning that picture. So much to work with there. I’d bet a dollar that the smiling guy in front totally farted.

We need to tread very lightly on equating dissenting and opposing voices with the spread of propaganda and hate. I’m not saying that shutting down problematic sources of information is always productive. But we shouldn’t treat those categories of information as if they are the same or require the same treatment. And

Truth. I was out and about over the weekend, but I stuck to places that were a deterrent to the white supremacy crowd like DC buses and“Chinatown.” Even the Portrait Gallery had some stealth anti-supremacy stuff happening.

I didn’t realize that Sam Smith was a thing. I thought he was just some British sessions singer. Go figure.

I’m only interested in his collaborations with Disclosure. That’s a safe space.

This is spot on. Empathy is important and it’s something that has been expected and delivered by marginalized communities to even be able to participate meaningfully in society (along with the examples you give). But it’s not effective without accountability. And accountability is what’s taking center stage right now

I walked home after getting my lemon buttercream cake (to justify having cake for dinner). So I nixed the bourbon for a refreshing gin and tonic (or two...). Baltimore Shot Tower gin since I’m out of Hendricks.

Thanks. That was my impression not having seen it. My immediate thought was that this movie was meant to validate folks who see the parallels between then and now rather than to a deconstruction of modern racism (which would indeed have to be a more nuanced movie that I don’t really expect her or from Lee generally).

This is really helpful. I was reading another review where the (white) reviewer expressed frustration that the white characters seem so caricatured and thus weren’t a reflection of the subtle racism that white viewers should maybe take away from this kind of story. That’s not something I’m looking for in the movie

I use the foam ones with the highest decibel blocker because I’m such a light sleeper and they’re shockingly comfortable for being so robust. I’ve tried using the ones that air traffic controllers use with the string on the back, but those always pop out of my ears.

Nailed it is so wonderful. Just having fun with baking—that’s basically the message and I’m here for that.

It’s a very inclusive event and delightfully mixed crowed of people—it’s about the point of view of the programming, not just for black attendees. People there support being at an event whose mission is to create a positive place for folks who are often marginalized in mainstream fandom spaces. And it’s hands down the

Yeah the crowd is actually really mixed. The distinction is that the programming starts with a baseline that the concerns of black nerds are the norm rather than having to start off justivying the value of addressing those concerns. It’s a different and empowering experience not to have to explain why the status quo
