The rule of thumb in my social circles is to ask first. I know it gives me a chance to adjust expectations or opt out if I’m not in the mood for new people. I’m almost always cool with it if I’m not forced to accommodate on the spot.

That’s pretty insane. As mentioned, there are clearly other tools to deal with that. The defendant sounds pretty unwieldy, but given that sitting through courtroom proceedings is pretty frustrating for defendants on a good day, judges have to have a have a few responses at their disposal before something like this.

This is an good issue for Hollywood to be dealing with because it’s been so overwhelmingly homogeneous for so long. If you want to be taken seriously, get better skills to handle the technical realities of the industry. And if that can’t be prioritized, then be prepared to have a response for it.
