I haven’t seen a functioning XJ posted here in ages.
Easiest challenge yet:
Not sure how exotic, not sure how super, but it’s the first thing that came to mind. Damn I wanted one of these when I was a kid...
“They had a DOHC 16V turbo that was a strong competition engine. I couldn’t say why they wouldn’t bother using it in the U.S.”
Another comment: Saab was allowed to develop manual trans axles for the rest of GM Europe which it did to reasonable success, including the very good F40 six speed. But GM’s stipulation that Saab use Aisin automatics caused the issues mentioned, as well as the #1 killer of Saab: FWD only. Contrary to a lot of claims,…
Seriously. The B2x5R is a hell of an engine no matter how you slice it. Saab was making engines with peak torque at 2500 RPM and a fat midrange way before EcoBoost propelled that concept to immense renown. With a stick these engines have enough torque to cruise smoothly and quietly at 2.5k and acceleration in-gear…
Counterpoint:
There are 2 Saab 9-4xs in my neighborhood (I live in Boston, Saab and Subaru country) I always get excited when I see them, which is about once a month. No one else I am with much cares.
Saab’s engines effectively evolved into the first gen ecotec motors though, and GM front-drivers still use Saab’s manual trans-axle. Saab’s reckless spending was their downfall, but it also kept GM alive and kicking past 2008.

20 year old E-class coupe finally gets AWD. Praise the Jesus hallelujah!
Their faltering economy and stagnant corporate/political organization are the real roots of Japanese car manufacturers settling into a safe routine of guaranteed car sales. Nissan in particular hasn’t gained any footing by toying with their line-up and Toyota had to kill Scion this year (for reasons). It’s nice to…
Funny thing is, the FiestaST is probably the cheapest M car you can buy new. Being as slow as it is, its actually faster than an E30 M3. And being that its light and toss-able with a quick steering ratio, its really spiritually closer to the E30 than most cars out there.
But my cheap M car is a 2dr GTI with the…
Mazda needs to go to a Tesla model of dealerships.
This is the solution to Mazda’s woes:
bring that 4WD diesel wagon with a manual in BROWN in North America.
Thanks for all that info. Good stuff.
You are correct, but that’s only part of the problem.
