If I remember correctly, the issue was that Subspace Emissary was leaked, and because of that precedent, and Sakurai's personal feelings on the issue, they did not even attempt to do something like that for Super Smash Bros U. For fear of the same thing, etc.
Fortunately with BB10, this is a built in feature...
